The hardest single day of the year to drive in New York
Not because of the runners. Because one continuous ribbon of closed road threads through all five boroughs at once, cutting north-south avenues in half and taking four bridges out of service for most of the day.
The problem is not getting to the race
It is everything else. If you have a flight on Sunday morning, a wedding in Brooklyn, or a client to collect in Midtown, marathon day affects you whether or not you have any interest in running.
The course severs east-west movement in Manhattan along First Avenue from 59th to 138th Street. It closes Fourth Avenue through much of Brooklyn. And it takes the Verrazzano-Narrows out entirely, which is the only direct driving route between Staten Island and Brooklyn.
What actually closes
Times below are typical. The confirmed 2026 schedule is published by New York Road Runners and the NYPD closer to the day, and we work to whatever is announced.
Roads do not all reopen at once. They open progressively behind the last runners and the course crews, from roughly two in the afternoon until early evening. An address that was unreachable at noon may be fine by four.
Four things that make the difference
Plan which side of the course you are on
The single most useful question on marathon Sunday. If your pickup and your destination are on opposite sides of the course, the journey is a different job entirely, and often a much longer one.
Use the crossings that stay open
Several bridges and tunnels remain in service all day. Knowing which ones, and which approaches to them are clear, is most of the work.
Move before the course closes, or after it opens
An early departure or a late-afternoon one avoids the worst of it. If your timing is flexible at all, we will tell you which window is easier.
Hold the vehicle rather than releasing it
Getting a car to you mid-morning in a closed zone is difficult. A car already with you is not.
Three different jobs, one day
Getting to the start, and home after
Early starts to Staten Island staging, and the harder job afterwards: collecting somebody who has just run 26.2 miles and does not want to walk to a subway. A Sprinter suits a family group following a runner around the city.
Airport transfers
Flights do not stop for the marathon. If you are flying on the Sunday, the route to JFK, LaGuardia or Newark may need to change and the departure time almost certainly does.
Corporate and hospitality
Sponsors, brand teams and the Expo at the Javits Center from 29 to 31 October. The week around the race is busy in its own right, before a single street closes.
Before race day
Every registered runner must collect their bib in person at the Expo, which means three days of heavy traffic to and from the Javits Center on the far West Side.
This is not a same-day booking
Marathon Sunday is one of the few days in the year when we genuinely cannot promise a car at short notice. Demand is concentrated into a single morning, and half the city is unreachable by road.

Marathon Sunday transport
When is the 2026 NYC Marathon?
Sunday 1 November 2026, the first Sunday of November as always. It marks the 50th running of the five-borough course, first run in 1976, so the field and the crowds are expected at capacity.
Can I still get to the airport on marathon Sunday?
Yes, but the route and the departure time may both need to change. Tell us your flight and we will work backwards from it. This is the booking people most often leave too late.
Which bridge closures matter most?
The Verrazzano-Narrows, closed roughly 7am to 3pm. It is the only direct driving route between Staten Island and Brooklyn, so anything crossing that water needs a different plan entirely.
Can you collect a runner at the finish?
Yes, and it is worth arranging properly. Central Park and Central Park South are closed for most of the day, so we agree a meeting point outside the closed zone in advance rather than trying to find each other in a crowd.
Should I book hourly or a single transfer?
Hourly, for anything on race day itself. Getting a car to you inside a closed zone mid-morning is difficult; a car already with you is not. See hourly hire.
How far in advance should I book?
At least two weeks. Marathon Sunday concentrates a whole day of demand into one morning, and it is one of the few dates where we may simply be full.
Do you charge more on marathon day?
No. Rates are fixed and quoted before you book, with no surge pricing regardless of the date. See our rates page.
