The word appears on every competitor's homepage, including ours, and on its own it tells you nothing. So this page is about what the money actually buys at this end of the market, and the two things it does not buy however much you spend.
What the difference actually is
Between an app ride and a chauffeured car on the same journey, this is where the gap sits. None of it is the leather.
The vehicle is the one you booked. Not a category that might arrive as something smaller. If you book an Escalade for six people with luggage, an Escalade comes.
The chauffeur is employed and licensed. Holding the TLC licence required to carry passengers, insured on a commercial policy, and trained in the parts of the job that are not driving. See chauffeur service for what that means in practice.
The price is fixed before you travel. No meter, no surge at six on a rainy Thursday, no recalculation afterwards. Tolls, parking and gratuity are inside the number.
Someone answers at three in the morning. Not a chat window. This is the single thing clients mention most after something has gone wrong somewhere else.
The flight is tracked. If the aircraft is two hours late the pickup moves, and there is no charge for a delay outside your control.
The car waits. On an hourly booking it stays with you between stops rather than being re-summoned and re-explained each time.
Two things no amount of money buys
A faster journey. Midtown at five o'clock is Midtown at five o'clock. A chauffeur knows which crossing is moving and will take it, and that is worth something real — but nobody is driving around the traffic. Any operator implying otherwise is selling you a story.
Value you do not need. The most common way people overpay with us is booking a larger vehicle than the trip requires. Four people with hand luggage do not need a Sprinter. If you tell us the group and the bags, we will quote the vehicle that fits rather than the one that bills highest.
Luxury and stretch are not the same request
A good number of people searching for a luxury car in New York are picturing an executive sedan with a chauffeur. A smaller number are picturing a white stretch limousine with a drinks cabinet. They are different bookings with different prices, and ending up with the wrong one is a bad evening.

A flat rate, and the question worth asking everyone
Transfers are quoted flat, point to point. Hourly hire carries a minimum that varies by vehicle and date. Tolls, parking and gratuity are inside the figure either way, and nothing is added afterwards.
When you compare quotes, ask each operator the same thing: is gratuity included, and is anything added later? The answers differ more than people expect, and a quote that is twenty per cent lower on the page often is not lower at all by the time you are dropped off. Our note on gratuity explains why.

What makes a car service luxury rather than ordinary?
The guarantee, mostly. A named vehicle class rather than a category, an employed and licensed chauffeur rather than whoever accepted the job, a price fixed before you travel, and a phone answered at any hour. The upholstery is the least of it.
How much does it cost?
There is no single figure, because an airport transfer and a six-hour evening are not comparable. Four things set it: the vehicle, the distance, whether the car waits, and the date. Our guide to pricing explains each, and the rates page covers what is included.
Is it worth it over an app?
Sometimes not, and we say so. For a short hop across town with no luggage and no deadline, the app usually wins on price. It is flight tracking, groups of four or more, hard deadlines and peak nights where the difference earns itself. We wrote a full comparison rather than pretending we win every time.
Do you have a stretch limousine?
We arrange them through a trusted affiliate rather than operating them ourselves, and we tell you before you book. Everything else on our fleet page is our own vehicle with our own chauffeur.
Will a luxury car get me there faster?
No. A chauffeur who knows which crossing is moving will save you something real, but nobody drives around Midtown traffic. We build realistic timings instead of optimistic ones, which is why we ask you to leave earlier than you would like.
Do you charge more on a busy night?
No. The rate is fixed when you book and does not move with demand, weather, traffic or the hour. New Year's Eve costs what we quoted in November.
Which vehicle should I book?
Tell us the number of people and the luggage and we will tell you, including when a smaller one will do. Booking larger than the trip needs is the most common way people overpay.
