31 December · The busiest night of the year

The one night when not having a car booked is a real problem

Every restaurant, every venue and every chauffeur in the city is committed weeks ahead. Rideshare surge pricing reaches levels people photograph and post. And a large part of Midtown is closed to vehicles from the afternoon onwards.

What actually happens in Midtown

The closures start earlier than people expect

The security perimeter around Times Square goes in during the afternoon, not the evening. Cross streets shut, avenues are restricted, and by early evening a large block of Midtown is closed to traffic entirely.

If your dinner, your hotel or your party sits inside that perimeter, the last part of the journey is on foot no matter who is driving. The useful question is how close we can get you, and from which direction.

Why a flat rate matters most tonight

This is the night surge pricing was invented for

Demand pricing works well for the company charging it and badly for everyone else. It raises the fare precisely when you are most stuck, and there is no night in the calendar when more people are more stuck than this one.

At one in the morning on the first of January, with the temperature near freezing and half of Manhattan trying to leave at the same time, a fare that has quadrupled is not really a choice.

We quote before you book and the number does not move afterwards. Not at midnight, not at two, not on New Year's Eve.

See our rates page for how a quote is worked out and what it includes.

How people book the night

Four shapes the evening usually takes

The usual choice

The car for the whole night

Dinner, then a party, then home whenever that turns out to be. The vehicle stays with you rather than being released into a city where you will not find another.

Groups and parties

Everyone travels together and everyone gets home. Considerably cheaper divided between a group than several cars, and nobody is left waiting on a kerb at two in the morning.

Booking

Earlier than you think

New Year's Eve is the single most committed night in our calendar. By mid-December the good vehicles are gone, and by the last week of the month we are turning work away.

  • Book by late November for the best availability
  • Tell us every address, including the last one
  • Say if any venue sits inside the Times Square perimeter
  • Give us a rough end time, even if it is a guess
  • Minimum hours apply on this night, and we confirm them upfront
The morning after

1 January is quieter than you would think

New Year's Day is one of the easiest mornings of the year to move around New York. Roads are empty, the closures are gone, and airport runs are quick.

If your travel is flexible, moving a journey from the evening of the 31st to the morning of the 1st makes it substantially easier and usually cheaper.

Common questions

New Year's Eve transport

How far in advance should I book?

By late November if you can. This is the most committed night in the calendar, and by the last week of December we are usually full.

Can you get me to Times Square?

As close as the security perimeter allows, which changes each year and goes in during the afternoon. Tell us your exact venue and we will get you to the nearest point a vehicle can reach, from the direction that works.

Do you charge more on New Year's Eve?

The rate reflects the date, as it does for any peak night, but it is quoted flat before you book and does not move afterwards. No surge multiplier, no meter, no fare that doubles at midnight.

Is there a minimum booking?

Yes, on this night. Minimum hours apply and vary by vehicle. We confirm the figure in the quote before you commit.

Can the car wait while we are at dinner and then at a party?

Yes, and that is the usual arrangement. Hourly hire keeps the vehicle with you all evening, which on this night is worth more than on any other.

What if we do not know when we will finish?

Give us a rough estimate and book slightly longer than you expect. Extending on the night is possible where the vehicle is free, but on 31 December it often is not.

Ready when you are

Send the date, the journey and the passenger count. We confirm the right vehicle and a flat rate, with nothing added afterwards.
